Hey, I just joined so I'll introduce myself: my name is Jade-Anoki. I put the hyphen in myself because I was used to being called Jadanoki (the two names strung together) by my family and I only went to day school in yr 3 after years of correspondence school, so being called just 'Jade' all the time didn't feel right. Anoki is a native American name, but in recent years I have learned that native American people (which I am not, I'm Australian) don't appreciate non-native American people using their names. There are valid reasons for that, it's just a shame. Anyway, it's my ame and I'm keeping it, but it does help that I can think of it instead as the Japanese (I think) mushroom, anoki! So I'm a mushroom!
All through school I was plagued by a torrent of willfully ignorant bigots of teachers who would refuse to pronounce my name correctly. A-noh-kee. It's not that hard. The only good mispronunciation I got was 'anarchy', or thereabouts. ^_^
I love unusual names. I think I got the least unusual of my sisters and I and I think I must admit that I've always held a little resentment about that!
I delight in hearing an unusual name, it's a mental kick!

Public mispronounciations [Dec. 23rd, 2004|11:21 am]

[mood |annoyedannoyed]

For those of you who didn't catch my last entry (under my other journal, atropine-dreams), my name's Aspasia. See here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/special_shotgun/817.html#cutid1 for my intro/pronounciation rant.

Last week I caught a bit of the Discovery channel--a show about the ancient Athenians. When they got into Pericles' story, they mentioned his famous mistress Aspasia. They completely mispronounced her name as ass-PAY-zee-a. You'd think a show aiming to be historically accurate might make an effort to find out the correct pronounciation of a name :( Then again, they said some things about her that I've never heard of before, despite a fair bit of research. Stupid Discovery channel, spreading misconceptions...

Hi, I've stopped by Special Shotgun a few times and finally decided to join. My name is Kamé. The a like in apple and the é sounds like "ay", so phonetically it's "Ka'may". I'll even allow Kuh'may. My mother says it's french and that there's also a soap named Kamé. Fantastic. I'm named after a bar of soap. But I have yet to find this soap named Kamé and after Googling my name, I got a lot of foreign sites so.. who knows.
I've heard a myriad of mispronunciations and for the most part, I've let them slide. I just smile weakly and correct them once. If they continue to mispronounce it, I usually don't bother unless they ask about it again. But even though I choose not to raise hell each time my name is butchered beyond recognition, it does irritate me a bit. Some of the mispronunciations I've endured are
- Came (*twitch* this one really bugs me)
- Cammie
- Kaymee
- Cammeile (??)
- Kah-meh (no biggie, the japanese pronunciation of my name.. means turtle)
- and the notorious KAMEHAMEHA! (from Dragonball Z..)
But the worst by far was Camel. Yeah, the spitting animal with the hump on its back. What the bloody hell? I suppose they somehow mistakened the accent mark for a lost "L" and slapped it onto the end.

I guess that's it. It's nice to come across a community about unique names. :D

No, it's not pronounced like that! [Aug. 26th, 2004|07:37 pm]

Hello. It's been an awkward pleasure to stumble into this community. I've always been a victim of people mispronouncing my name.

Firstly, my name is supposedly Fengjia. The correct pronounciation is as simple as "Feng - Jia". Okay, maybe I didn't explain properly but it's really just pronounced like that. My name spells the pronounciation.

Everyone mispronounces my name at the "gjia" part, and they start calling me "fing-jarrr". It's majestically annoying because I simply can't stand it. It's like trying to imitate an Irish accent and failing miserably. Irish accents are great. I was thoroughly pissed when teachers would mark the attendance and be like "Fing-jaar, is fing-jarrr here?" Although I knew that she WAS calling me, I contemplated replying. But I did in the end.

My name was shortened to make life easier for people. It's not much of a difference, but most of my friends know that my alternative name would be Fjia. Haha, another complication arises.

Fjia's really simple to pronounce. Just take away the letter "J" and you'll get Fia, which is, if you don't know, pronounced  as "feee-yyahh". Most people would be going "fer-jar".

They won't stop torturing me. And no, I won't change my name to make things easier for the people. I TRIED TO!

Hi, my name is Devin Tuffy and I would like to join the special shotgun community. For years I have had to deal with three separate issues:

1. People mispelling my name, because my parents chose "Devin" instead of the more commen "Devon".
2. People shortening my name to "Dev", which annoys the hell out of me.
3. Would-be clever people who think they're the first person in the universe to ever make a comment about the surname "tuffy". Tuffmeister, TuffGuy, etc. The only clever Tuffy joke ever came from my brother Shawn who used the online ID "Shawn 'Tuffy' Combs".

I'm not a violent type, but I would like to have a mental special shotgun for people who dont get it.

Welcome! [Mar. 12th, 2004|02:23 pm]
Do you have a cool name that people make fun of or can't spell or say right? Does your name rhyme with something in such a way that you've been hearing the same crappy joke for the last several years? Then come in and bitch about it. You're amongst friends.

I'll start.
(stands up)
Hi. My name is Grahm and I have a special shotgun in my coat. It's reserved for people who insist on making some sort of lame Graham Cracker joke. First of all, the spelling is different, as you can see. Second of all, it was a little bit funny when Mark Bull first said it back in Kindergarten. It's not so funny now that I'm pushing 30.
Thank you.
